“If we do not know Him, we will not understand why it is so urgent that others hear the good news.”
There are people who think that I’m wasting my life as a missionary.
I must be insane to live in Northern Uganda. Surely it’s okay to go for a time, to live amongst the people, to have an exciting adventure, but to stay and give up so many things is absurd.
If you venture into missions and approach your family and friends, you will likely hear things like this. You may hear, like I did, “Why go there? There are so many needy people right here. They need help her;, you should stay.”
If you are called locally, they might not understand why you expend yourself and your resources so much instead of making sure you will have a cushy retirement, the latest electronics, the most fashionable clothing, etc. These people have good intentions, but sometimes they can’t understand.
In order to understand the motivation for missions, we must first know God. If we do not comprehend who He is and how great His love for humanity, missions will seem foolish and illogical. We must know the creator of life to find the purpose for our life. When we discover the love of God, and His passion for this world, our lives will change. We will realize that life is about so much more than pursuing the American dream or making sure we have great stock options. These things are not wrong, and it’s okay to plan for your retirement.
The point is, the world is dying and desperate for a touch from God. Until we know Him and realize this reality, we will not share His passion and urgency for the lost and broken. Time is short, and there is a whole world full of people who desperately need a touch from God. There are whole people groups who have not yet even heard the Word of God in their language. There are victims of war, poverty, abuse and disease who need to know there is still hope. There are even people sitting in penthouses with more riches than they can handle, who are miserable, empty, and lifeless.
Those of us who know God, who understand the times and the condition of the world, must not sit idly by. There is urgency today more than ever before, to spread the love of God and the good news of salvation to whomever will listen.
To know God, and to make Him known, that others may also know Him and His amazing unconditional love and forgiveness - This is what it is all about.
