My name is Erica and I’m a New Yorker who lives in the untamed bush of Northern Uganda. I have lived here for the better part of the last eight years. In 2015, I married a wonderful Ugandan man. He’s not from here either; he’s from the city. (I think he experiences more culture shock than I do.)
How does a New Yorker end up going to Northern Uganda and calling it home?
When I was eight years old I came to know the love of Christ. I had a desire to share that with others far away. Things went a little sideways along the way, but fast-forward to 2005 and I was on a plane heading to Kenya. This was my first time overseas, and the time when my heart would fall in love with Africa.
When I was there, I learned of a war in Northern Uganda that had ravaged the Acholi for 20 years. I heard of a rebel group that kidnapped innocent children and forced thousands to flee from their homes into IDP (Internally Displaced Persons) Camps. I thought of people my age who grew up running in fear for their lives while I complained if I didn’t have the right cereal or my prom dress wasn’t as cute as someone else’s. Aside from grief, I felt a need to act.
The next year I landed in Uganda. I spent a month here and knew that this was where I was born to be. The rest is history.
In 2011, I formed an organization called Africa4God http://www.africa4god.org with the help of some amazing people.
In 2014, my first book was published. My second book is in the works.
I’m looking forward to meeting with you here, and journeying through some of the things I have learned in the past ten years.
