We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed— always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10
Sometimes, life is tough.
It feels like we can’t catch a break.
The deeper we get in service to the Lord, the more we feel buffeted on every side. With every person saved or raised up, there seems to be two who backslide. For every person assisted medically, several more seem to succumb to sickness. Furthermore, sometimes it seems like God is late. He could have helped us, if He intervened. But now it’s too late. We think we have an idea of how things should go, and when they don’t go that way we feel the wind get knocked out of us.
Have you been there? Or am I the only one? ☺
The reality is ⎯ we do all struggle in this life, BUT we are not defeated. As believers in Jesus, as ministers of His Gospel, we operate from a place of victory. He has already secured it for us. Yes, we have an enemy with hosts of spiritual wickedness fighting against us, but he is a defeated foe. And God, in His perfect timing (not ours), will swoop in and rescue us. He will make sense of what looks like a mess now. He is at work behind the scenes, even in our biggest battles.
Have you ever started reading a book or watching a movie and worried that it would not end well? Did you ever skip to the end to make sure the ending is happy? I have stopped watching movies because I know that I won’t be able to handle the outcome. I have a hard time handling sad endings. I like a happy ending, I love it when the good guys win and everyone lives “happily ever after.”
If we take a sneak peak at the end of our stories, we can rest assured that we will have a happy ending. As believers, we may go through hard times and battles now (in fact, we definitely will) but we know that we win in the end. Jesus already won the victory for us, and when we run the race and cross the finish line, we will receive the crown of life.
Let’s glimpse at just a few encouraging words from His Word:
“The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 15:56-58
“For the Lord your God is He who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” Deuteronomy 20:4
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13
“Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?... Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:31-32, 37-39
I can’t say it better than He has. We must be aware that we are in a battle, we must put on the armor and stand firm in His power; and rest in the reality that we fight from a victory that God has already secured for us. We are the winners!
Food for Thought:
Do you feel victorious today?
Are you walking out the victory that Christ has secured for you?
How do you think you can effectively remind yourself daily of the victory that is yours?
What other scriptures have been a source of strength and encouragement for you in hard times?
