In early 2016, we began our weekly door to door and Bible study fellowships in BiiWang Village. This is a village on the base of a rock called “Abayo.” The local people believe that there was a leper many years ago who had magical powers. When he saw how wicked the village was, he caused a rock to fall from heaven upon the villagers to kill them. To this day, people fear going too close to “Abayo” rock. Biiwang village is near the base of the rock, and it is a reminder to them of judgment. They deeply fear the demonic forces. Ironically, this has led them to be very involved in witchcraft and idolatry, perhaps to appease the spirits. The village had no Christian church there when we heard about it, and most of the people didn’t know who God is or anything about His love and plans for their lives. My friend and colleague Angela told us about the place one day last year, and we arranged around Christmas time to go for a visit. The people were very welcoming and eager to hear more about the God who loves them. Each one of our team of four had the privilege of sharing with them. I got to explain that there was a Rock from Heaven, but not for judgment. Jesus came as the Rock of Salvation. He came to take our judgment so that we can experience the love and forgiveness of The Father. Anyone who stands upon Christ is set free, but those who reject Him will indeed face judgment. The people understood, and since that first day, many have begun to follow Jesus.
One such man is Kenneth.
When we first met Kenneth, we were going from door to door meeting the community and sharing with those who were interested. We came upon a group of men drinking locally brewed alcohol under a tree. Most of them mocked us, but they allowed us to share. After I shared, we didn’t have to even give an invitation before this tall, skinny, broken man came forward and got on his knees. Kenneth wanted to give his heart and life to Jesus. After that, he wanted to walk around with us to other people. He introduced us to some other villagers and wanted to stay close to Pastor Jimmy.
We found out that several weeks before, while he was at the market, his wife burned down their home with all of his clothes and belongings inside. He came home to find everything he owned was ashes, and his wife left with their children. He was completely hopeless and decided to drown himself in alcohol. He was planning to commit suicide even, but God met him and set him free.
Now when we see Kenneth he is smiling from ear to ear. There is a complete peace in his life. God has also provided clothing and work for him in order to restore that which was lost. Pastor Jimmy meets with Kenneth twice a week to do in-depth one-on-one discipleship. He has left the alcoholism behind, and God has brought back his children to him. This is an incredible miracle!!
Kenneth’s life showcases the faithfulness and grace of God. In his brokenness, at his lowest, God met him and set him free. We continue to see him growing stronger as he learns more about God’s great plan for his life, and as he steps out to be the man that God has called him to be.
Kenneth no longer fears the rock, because He is standing upon the solid Rock of Christ Jesus. His life and the transformation in him brings me to tears. I am so humbled that God allowed us to witness his salvation and we get to watch him change day by day. I believe that God has wonderful plans for this man and his family. I can’t wait to see what’s next!
