I don’t have a pat answer for everyone, but there are some steps that you can take to seek the Lord and see.
If God has called us to be a missionary, He has created us for that purpose. God plants a desire or burden within our hearts, sometimes years before we see it come to fruition. If the desire is truly from God, we will receive confirmation in the following:
- Study: As we spend time in the Word of God, He will speak to our hearts. Pray before you read, asking Him to give you insight and direction for the course ahead.
There have been times when I have asked God specifically to give me a verse to hold onto in answer to something, and God has been faithful to do it.
If you don’t know how to study the Bible well, I would recommend meeting with a mature believer or checking out some great online resources. You can view free commentaries and word meanings on websites such as studylight.org, blueletterbible.org, and more.
- Pray: Aside from reading the Word, we must spend time seeking God in prayer.
Don’t forget that prayer is supposed to be a two-way conversation. Remember not to just ask God for things, but spend time quietly seeking to hear His voice. Spend time worshipping Him and getting your heart right before Him. This will help to change you from wanting what you want, to wanting what He has planned for your life. This makes it easier to hear His voice through the noise, and not just hear what you want.
- Seek godly counsel: Accountability in a believer’s life is so important. That is especially true if you are stepping out in a ministry role and thinking of moving overseas.
Stay close to people who are stronger than you spiritually. If you are a man, let it be a man. If you are a woman, let it be a woman. Don’t give the devil a foothold by creating an inappropriate situation.
Ask your accountability partners to stand with you in prayer and to give you insight. Also talk to your pastor and other elders in the church. Sometimes they can see something more clearly because they are outside of the situation.
Stay in fellowship and stay open with people. I recently spoke with a friend whose heart was set on moving to the Ukraine to minister to people there. She started the process of joining an organization, she was raising the money, but then her pastor and another strong believer came to her and felt strongly that she should not go. They saw some red flags in the organization and spoke openly to her about it. She heeded their counsel and she cancelled her plans. Now she continues to trust and await what God has in store for her.
- Observe: As you do these other things, look out for God’s provision and opened doors. Also be on the lookout for closed doors. God might say no to something you think is right. He will confirm His will with His provision. As the saying goes, “God’s will, God’s bill.”
- Don’t lose heart: Sometimes the Lord desires for us to wait upon Him before He gives us clear direction.
There is beauty in the waiting, because as we wait we go through a process. He changes us, molds us more into His image, and prepares us for the work that He has for us. It is a beautiful time. Don’t miss the beauty in the waiting.
