Christmas is just around the corner. That's not a surprise to you who live in the West, as you are inundated with commercials, decorations, and expectations of consumerism. How do you live in that world and still enjoy the true meaning of Christmas? Well, I know its no easy task. But it is possible. I would like to begin a four-part series focused on the true meaning of Christmas and how to stay sane in the midst of the chaos and pressure.
Let's talk about Love. (Yes, the L word.) But not the watered-down version of the word that we throw around so flippantly. Let's talk about real Love. Of the agape variety. “Agape” is the word in the Greek language which is used in the Bible to talk about God’s love toward us. It is an unconditional (no strings attached) love that can’t help but have strong affection and care, because that is its nature. To put it more clearly, God can’t help but love us. No matter what we have done, no matter where we have been. That is who He is. That Love was most beautifully displayed when God put on human skin, dwelt in the frailty of a vulnerable baby, lived in humble circumstances, and walked for 33 years in our broken world. He left perfection for us, knowing that He came to die and suffer, all because of that Love.
Is that crazy or what?! If we are honest, we know how messed up we are.
Why did He do that? How could He love the likes of us?
And yet He does.
It is the greatest miracle in my mind. The Incarnation of God into the fetus of a young Jewish girl is remarkable, yes. But that He chose to do it because He loves us really blows my mind.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of this Christmas season, don't miss that. Take time to meditate on His Great Love. I am mind blown when I think about it, and humbled and thankful for how amazing He is. I hope that you are, too.
